Extreme Weather and Civil Tensions Overshadow Strong Cultural Appeal in Peak Season

A new report from the Institute of the Greek Tourism Confederation (INSETE) has analyzed the online reputation of tourism in Greece during the recent peak season (July to September). The findings reveal a mix of long-term strengths and significant, crisis-driven setbacks that harmed the country’s public image.

The Challenges: Weather and Instability

The report indicates a sharp drop in Greece’s Net Sentiment Index during the summer months of 2025, pushing the country to the bottom among comparable destinations. This decline was primarily caused by widespread negative media coverage due to:

  • Extreme Weather: Severe wildfires across various regions, intense heat that forced attractions like the Acropolis to close temporarily, and powerful storms that disrupted ferries, leaving thousands of tourists stranded and causing fatalities.
  • Civil Tensions: Disruptions, including protests and clashes, added to the sense of instability for travelers.

These crises created a negative online environment that overshadowed the positive aspects of travel, though the report notes that a negative sentiment index does not necessarily predict actual traveler planning.

The Strengths: Culture and Authenticity

Despite the challenges, Greece’s long-standing strengths remain highly valued by travelers:

  • Cultural Heritage: The country’s historical and cultural narrative, including the Acropolis and sites like Meteora, remained its strongest positive asset in online discussions.
  • Hospitality and Gastronomy: High levels of positive sentiment were consistently reported for Greek hospitality and local food experiences.
  • Authentic Experiences: Tourists continued to celebrate immersive activities such as olive picking, hiking, and sea turtle spotting, reinforcing Greece’s appeal for those seeking meaningful connection and atmosphere.

Overall, the report suggests that while Greece continues to attract visitors with its blend of coastal beauty and rich culture, managing the increasing threat of extreme weather and maintaining stability is crucial for protecting and improving its global reputation.
